Coding Style Compatibility introduced by
For compatibility and reusability of your code, PSR1 recommends that a file should introduce either new symbols (like classes, functions, etc.) or have side-effects (like outputting something, or including other files), but not both at the same time. The first symbol is defined on line 32 and the first side effect is on line 25.

The PSR-1: Basic Coding Standard recommends that a file should either introduce new symbols, that is classes, functions, constants or similar, or have side effects. Side effects are anything that executes logic, like for example printing output, changing ini settings or writing to a file.

The idea behind this recommendation is that merely auto-loading a class should not change the state of an application. It also promotes a cleaner style of programming and makes your code less prone to errors, because the logic is not spread out all over the place.

To learn more about the PSR-1, please see the PHP-FIG site on the PSR-1.

Bug introduced by
The variable $date does not seem to be defined for all execution paths leading up to this point.

If you define a variable conditionally, it can happen that it is not defined for all execution paths.

Let’s take a look at an example:

function myFunction($a) {
    switch ($a) {
        case 'foo':
            $x = 1;
            break;

        case 'bar':
            $x = 2;
            break;
    }

    // $x is potentially undefined here.
    echo $x;
}

In the above example, the variable $x is defined if you pass “foo” or “bar” as argument for $a. However, since the switch statement has no default case statement, if you pass any other value, the variable $x would be undefined.

Available Fixes

  1. Check for existence of the variable explicitly:

    function myFunction($a) {
        switch ($a) {
            case 'foo':
                $x = 1;
                break;

            case 'bar':
                $x = 2;
                break;
        }

        if (isset($x)) { // Make sure it's always set.
            echo $x;
        }
    }

  2. Define a default value for the variable:

    function myFunction($a) {
        $x = ''; // Set a default which gets overridden for certain paths.
        switch ($a) {
            case 'foo':
                $x = 1;
                break;

            case 'bar':
                $x = 2;
                break;
        }

        echo $x;
    }

  3. Add a value for the missing path:

    function myFunction($a) {
        switch ($a) {
            case 'foo':
                $x = 1;
                break;

            case 'bar':
                $x = 2;
                break;

            // We add support for the missing case.
            default:
                $x = '';
                break;
        }

        echo $x;
    }

It seems like $date can also be of type false; however, Language::timeanddate() does only seem to accept string, did you maybe forget to handle an error condition?
