How to fix   Duplicated Code    Complexity

Duplicated Code

Duplicate code is one of the most pungent code smells. A rule that is often used is to re-structure code once it is duplicated in three or more places.

Common duplication problems, and corresponding solutions are:

Complex Class

 Tip:   Before tackling complexity, make sure that you eliminate any duplication first. This often can reduce the size of classes significantly.

Complex classes like RefreshLinks often do a lot of different things. To break such a class down, we need to identify a cohesive component within that class. A common approach to find such a component is to look for fields/methods that share the same prefixes, or suffixes. You can also have a look at the cohesion graph to spot any un-connected, or weakly-connected components.

Once you have determined the fields that belong together, you can apply the Extract Class refactoring. If the component makes sense as a sub-class, Extract Subclass is also a candidate, and is often faster.

While breaking up the class, it is a good idea to analyze how other classes use RefreshLinks, and based on these observations, apply Extract Interface, too.

Coding Style Compatibility introduced by
For compatibility and reusability of your code, PSR1 recommends that a file should introduce either new symbols (like classes, functions, etc.) or have side-effects (like outputting something, or including other files), but not both at the same time. The first symbol is defined on line 31 and the first side effect is on line 24.

The PSR-1: Basic Coding Standard recommends that a file should either introduce new symbols, that is classes, functions, constants or similar, or have side effects. Side effects are anything that executes logic, like for example printing output, changing ini settings or writing to a file.

The idea behind this recommendation is that merely auto-loading a class should not change the state of an application. It also promotes a cleaner style of programming and makes your code less prone to errors, because the logic is not spread out all over the place.

To learn more about the PSR-1, please see the PHP-FIG site on the PSR-1.

It seems like $dbr defined by $this->getDB(DB_REPLICA, array('vslow')) on line 93 can be null; however, RefreshLinks::intervalCond() does not accept null, maybe add an additional type check?

Unless you are absolutely sure that the expression can never be null because of other conditions, we strongly recommend to add an additional type check to your code:

Bug Best Practice introduced by
The expression $end of type integer|null is loosely compared to false; this is ambiguous if the integer can be zero. You might want to explicitly use === null instead.

In PHP, under loose comparison (like ==, or !=, or switch conditions), values of different types might be equal.

For integer values, zero is a special case, in particular the following results might be unexpected:

0   == false // true
0   == null  // true
123 == false // false
123 == null  // false

// It is often better to use strict comparison
0 === false // false
0 === null  // false

If a method or function can return multiple different values and unless you are sure that you only can receive a single value in this context, we recommend to add an additional type check:

/**
 * @return array|string
 */
function returnsDifferentValues($x) {
    if ($x) {
        return 'foo';
    }

    return array();
}

$x = returnsDifferentValues($y);
if (is_array($x)) {
    // $x is an array.
}

It seems like $ns defined by parameter $ns on line 247 can also be of type boolean; however, Title::inNamespace() does only seem to accept integer, maybe add an additional type check?

This check looks at variables that have been passed in as parameters and are passed out again to other methods.

If the outgoing method call has stricter type requirements than the method itself, an issue is raised.

An additional type check may prevent trouble.

Bug introduced by
It seems like $dbr defined by $this->getDB(DB_REPLICA, array('vslow')) on line 327 can be null; however, RefreshLinks::intervalCond() does not accept null, maybe add an additional type check?

Unless you are absolutely sure that the expression can never be null because of other conditions, we strongly recommend to add an additional type check to your code:

/** @return stdClass|null */
function mayReturnNull() { }

function doesNotAcceptNull(stdClass $x) { }

// With potential error.
function withoutCheck() {
    $x = mayReturnNull();
    doesNotAcceptNull($x); // Potential error here.
}

// Safe - Alternative 1
function withCheck1() {
    $x = mayReturnNull();
    if ( ! $x instanceof stdClass) {
        throw new \LogicException('$x must be defined.');
    }
    doesNotAcceptNull($x);
}

// Safe - Alternative 2
function withCheck2() {
    $x = mayReturnNull();
    if ($x instanceof stdClass) {
        doesNotAcceptNull($x);
    }
}

The function wfWaitForSlaves() has been deprecated with message: since 1.27 Use LBFactory::waitForReplication

This function has been deprecated. The supplier of the file has supplied an explanatory message.

The explanatory message should give you some clue as to whether and when the function will be removed from the class and what other function to use instead.
