How to fix   Duplicated Code    Complexity

Duplicated Code

Duplicate code is one of the most pungent code smells. A rule that is often used is to re-structure code once it is duplicated in three or more places.

Common duplication problems, and corresponding solutions are:

Complex Class

 Tip:   Before tackling complexity, make sure that you eliminate any duplication first. This often can reduce the size of classes significantly.

Complex classes like DMSDocumentSet often do a lot of different things. To break such a class down, we need to identify a cohesive component within that class. A common approach to find such a component is to look for fields/methods that share the same prefixes, or suffixes. You can also have a look at the cohesion graph to spot any un-connected, or weakly-connected components.

Once you have determined the fields that belong together, you can apply the Extract Class refactoring. If the component makes sense as a sub-class, Extract Subclass is also a candidate, and is often faster.

While breaking up the class, it is a good idea to analyze how other classes use DMSDocumentSet, and based on these observations, apply Extract Interface, too.

The method Documents() does not exist on DMSDocumentSet. Did you maybe mean getDocuments()?

This check marks calls to methods that do not seem to exist on an object.

This is most likely the result of a method being renamed without all references to it being renamed likewise.

It seems like you code against a concrete implementation and not the interface GridFieldComponent as the method setDisplayFields() does only exist in the following implementations of said interface: GridFieldDataColumns, GridFieldEditableColumns, GridFieldExternalLink.

Let’s take a look at an example:

interface User
{
    /** @return string */
    public function getPassword();
}

class MyUser implements User
{
    public function getPassword()
    {
        // return something
    }

    public function getDisplayName()
    {
        // return some name.
    }
}

class AuthSystem
{
    public function authenticate(User $user)
    {
        $this->logger->info(sprintf('Authenticating %s.', $user->getDisplayName()));
        // do something.
    }
}

In the above example, the authenticate() method works fine as long as you just pass instances of MyUser. However, if you now also want to pass a different implementation of User which does not have a getDisplayName() method, the code will break.

Available Fixes

  1. Change the type-hint for the parameter:

    class AuthSystem
    {
        public function authenticate(MyUser $user) { /* ... */ }
    }

  2. Add an additional type-check:

    class AuthSystem
    {
        public function authenticate(User $user)
        {
            if ($user instanceof MyUser) {
                $this->logger->info(/** ... */);
            }

            // or alternatively
            if ( ! $user instanceof MyUser) {
                throw new \LogicException(
                    '$user must be an instance of MyUser, '
                   .'other instances are not supported.'
                );
            }

        }
    }

Note: PHP Analyzer uses reverse abstract interpretation to narrow down the types inside the if block in such a case.

The method getAllTagsMap does not exist on object<DMSDocument>? Since you implemented __call, maybe consider adding a @method annotation.

If you implement __call and you know which methods are available, you can improve IDE auto-completion and static analysis by adding a @method annotation to the class.

This is often the case, when __call is implemented by a parent class and only the child class knows which methods exist:

class ParentClass {
    private $data = array();

    public function __call($method, array $args) {
        if (0 === strpos($method, 'get')) {
            return $this->data[strtolower(substr($method, 3))];
        }

        throw new \LogicException(sprintf('Unsupported method: %s', $method));
    }
}

/**
 * If this class knows which fields exist, you can specify the methods here:
 *
 * @method string getName()
 */
class SomeClass extends ParentClass { }

It seems like $keyValuesPair defined by \Convert::json2array($this->KeyValuePairs) on line 284 can also be of type boolean; however, SearchContext::getResults() does only seem to accept array, maybe add an additional type check?

If a method or function can return multiple different values and unless you are sure that you only can receive a single value in this context, we recommend to add an additional type check:

/**
 * @return array|string
 */
function returnsDifferentValues($x) {
    if ($x) {
        return 'foo';
    }

    return array();
}

$x = returnsDifferentValues($y);
if (is_array($x)) {
    // $x is an array.
}

If this a common case that PHP Analyzer should handle natively, please let us know by opening an issue.

$documents is not used, you could remove the assignment.

This check looks for variable assignements that are either overwritten by other assignments or where the variable is not used subsequently.

$myVar = 'Value';
$higher = false;

if (rand(1, 6) > 3) {
    $higher = true;
} else {
    $higher = false;
}

Both the $myVar assignment in line 1 and the $higher assignment in line 2 are dead. The first because $myVar is never used and the second because $higher is always overwritten for every possible time line.

The method Documents() does not exist on DMSDocumentSet. Did you maybe mean getDocuments()?

This check marks calls to methods that do not seem to exist on an object.

This is most likely the result of a method being renamed without all references to it being renamed likewise.

Should the type for parameter $member not be null|Member?

This check looks for @param annotations where the type inferred by our type inference engine differs from the declared type.

It makes a suggestion as to what type it considers more descriptive.

Most often this is a case of a parameter that can be null in addition to its declared types.
