Are you sure the assignment to $response is correct as $event->getResponse() (which targets AWurth\Silex\User\Event\FormEvent::getResponse()) seems to always return null.

This check looks for function or method calls that always return null and whose return value is assigned to a variable.

class A
{
    function getObject()
    {
        return null;
    }

}

$a = new A();
$object = $a->getObject();

The method getObject() can return nothing but null, so it makes no sense to assign that value to a variable.

The reason is most likely that a function or method is imcomplete or has been reduced for debug purposes.

It seems like $response defined by $event->getResponse() on line 58 can be null; however, AWurth\Silex\User\Event\...nseEvent::__construct() does not accept null, maybe add an additional type check?

Unless you are absolutely sure that the expression can never be null because of other conditions, we strongly recommend to add an additional type check to your code:

/** @return stdClass|null */
function mayReturnNull() { }

function doesNotAcceptNull(stdClass $x) { }

// With potential error.
function withoutCheck() {
    $x = mayReturnNull();
    doesNotAcceptNull($x); // Potential error here.
}

// Safe - Alternative 1
function withCheck1() {
    $x = mayReturnNull();
    if ( ! $x instanceof stdClass) {
        throw new \LogicException('$x must be defined.');
    }
    doesNotAcceptNull($x);
}

// Safe - Alternative 2
function withCheck2() {
    $x = mayReturnNull();
    if ($x instanceof stdClass) {
        doesNotAcceptNull($x);
    }
}
